Race in New York City in 2015

For many, running between the skyscrapers of downtown Manhattan is a life-long dream. More than 50,000 get to fulfil their dream every year at the New York City Marathon, which started in 1970 and has become one of the most important marathons worldwide.

From its humble beginnings til today, the race has witnessed many magical moments: watching the 127 athletes take to the streets in 1970; seeing legendary co-founder Fred Lebow greet athletes at the finish line; cheering Lebow across the line in 1970 and 1971, but also in arguably one of the most emotional races: 1992, two years before his untimely death due to cancer.

However one question remains – how do get into next year’s New York City Marathon?

First things first: Registration opens on January 15, 2015 and closes on February 15, 2015. Entry costs 347 USD for non-US residents and up to 255 USD for US residents.

Option 1. You belong to the New York Road Runners Club and meet the qualifying criteria: members of the NYRR are guaranteed entry if they have completed nine and volunteered at one race hosted by the NYRR.

Option 2. You were registered for the 2014 New York City Marathon but couldn’t race and officially cancelled your entry. Watch out – this only works once, so if you have cancelled twice in a row, you are out of the game.

Option 3. You have raced in 15 (no, we are not kidding ...) New York City Marathons. If you have made it this far – congratulations, you just earned yourself a lifetime guaranteed entry (as long as you apply during the registration period).

Option 4. You are fast. A certain number of entries are given to athletes who can meet certain time standards; the details can be found here ( but beware, these entries are capped, and you either need to met a time standard in one of the NYRR races or be able to prove your time with a certificate.

Option 5. The famous draw. Each year, the NYRR draws a number of lucky athletes divided into three categories (New York, National, International) that will be given entry to the race. Please note that a non-refundable processing fee will be charged to your credit card.

Option 6. Selected travel partners are allowed to offer packages which include an entry.

Option 7. You are a disabled athlete. The NYRR reserves the right to select from the number of applicants and certain criteria must be met. Find out more here:

What if you don’t make it in – well that’s easy. How about joining the Wings for Life World Run – there is a guaranteed entry waiting for you!
