The Wings for Life World Run is a sports competition that simultaneously takes place in multiple countries across the globe. All participants in all countries, regardless of age and sex, will start at the same time (May 7, 2017, 11:00 AM UTC). There is not any fixed distance, target time or finish line. Each participant leaves the race once overtaken by the catcher car (the catcher cars are used in all locations). The catcher cars will start simultaneously from the start line exactly at 11:30 AM UTC and will be following the route of the run with the same speed. The catcher cars in all locations will be simultaneously increasing their speed until they overtake the last runner and the global winner is officially announced. The global winners will be a man and a woman who will manage to run the biggest distance until overtaken by the catcher car. Regional winners in each location will also be determined.
The catcher car is a moving finish line of the Wings for Life World Run. The runners still moving in front of the official catcher car along the route are considered to be in play.
This is how the catcher car moves:
2:00 PM: the competition starts
2:30 PM: the catcher car takes off at the initial speed (15 km/h, or 9.32 miles/h)
3:30 PM: the catcher car accelerates (16 km/h, or 9.94 miles/h)
4:30 PM: the catcher car accelerates (17 km/h, or 10.56 miles/h)
5:30 PM: the catcher car accelerates (20 km/h, or 12.43 miles/h)
6:30 PM: the catcher car accelerates (35 km/h, or 21.75 miles/h)*
*the catcher car drives with this speed until the last runner is overtaken.
The route will start from Lazhechnikova street and will go through various streets of Kolomna to Ozyorskoye highway and then alongside the Oka river. The participants have to strictly follow the route indicated by the organizers (with the special signs and milestones).
The feeding stations will be set up at each 5 km milestone of the route. These will be tables with beverages (water and Red Bull) and food (oranges, bananas and energy snacks).
Any person of at least 18 years old as of the date of the event may participate, provided that such person is considered adult according to the laws of the country where they live and the country where they want to participate in the Wings for Life World Run. The organizers reserve the right to call for the documents of any participant to check their age. The catcher car is equipped with devices that send a signal to a participant's special tag mounted on the participant's number once the catcher car overtakes this participant. Please note that the competition results are calculated based on the distance covered, but not the overall TIME in the race.
Once overtaken by the catcher car, a participant must move off the road and go to the dedicated assembly point (forwards or backwards to the nearest feeding station). The feeding stations are located at each 5 km, 10 km, 15 km, etc. milestone. Then the participants will be transferred to the Speed skating center on buses.
