Wings for Life World Run gave us many inspiring stories, introduced many special and brave people during the years. It still does! Emrah Baki Başoğlu, one of the ambasssadors of the run in Turkey, is one of them.
Just 6.5 months ago, Emrah Baki was told that he was unlikely to walk again, but now he is preparing to run for those who can’t on May 7.
We listened to Emrah's story from him and his best friend Can Çetin.
Everyone was very pessimistic and said that he wouldn’t be able to walk again. But I believed in Emrah Baki’s perseverence!
- Can Çetin
The biggest dream of Emrah Baki and Can was to take a road trip with motorcycles. Can was the first to realize this dream. "I’d envied him so much, and decided to buy a motorcycle," says Emrah Baki. As his friend for 15 years, Can had naturally supported him. "Seeing that he was so enthusiastic, I helped him pick a motorcycle. It was me who found the motorcycle he had an accident with. For that reason, I felt really guilty, even though I didn’t give it away to him."
Just three months later, Emrah Baki had a serious accident with his motorcycle. "I only remember that I was trying to control my bike at that moment. Then it was all black."
I told myself, that if I can ever stand up and walk again, I’ll spread my story, and other people like me will learn about my story, become hopeful and persist!

After his operation, his doctor told his relatives that his chance of walking again was 5%. Unaware of this, Emrah Baki started to research about his injury. But he didn’t find any inspiring stories. “I promised there and then,” he says. “If I can ever stand up and walk again, I’ll spread my story, and other people like me will learn about my story, become hopeful and persist!”
Two months after the accident, after intense physiotherapy sessions, Emrah was able to move his toe. Now he had more hope.
People with spinal cord injury need morale and hope above all. We will run to give them that.

Having had an accident in October 2016, Emrah Baki is mostly healed now. He will even run for those who can’t in Wings for Life World Run. “When I heard about this event, I felt very happy and decided to attend it no matter what.” Me and three friends will be in İzmir on May 7. People with spinal cord injury need morale and hope above all. We will run to give them that."
