In winning, the first Wings for Life World Run, Elise Molvik, an 18-year-old student from Norway, Lemawork Ketema, an Ethiopian refugee living in Austria, and Remigio Quispe, a farmer and father from Peru, collected one of the most amazing prizes in the running world: A world tour of wining and dining, flying in helicopters, hiking up mountains and just kicking back and enjoying a run in some of the world’s most stunning places.
From Salzburg in the snows of January to mid-summer in Cape, then Hong Kong to Sydney before a relaxing few days in Hawaii and an action-packed end to the journey in Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro, Elise and her sister, Maria, and Remigio and his son, Jhon, had an unforgettable, highlight-filled adventure that ordinary people can barely dream of.
Elise kept a blog of their incredible trip of a lifetime, but here are some of the highlights to push you through those last few training sessions before May 3.
The three winners met in Salzburg for a day of sightseeing, VIP style, and meeting the Wings for Life staff. After Lemawork had officially handed over the prize round-the-world trip to Remigio, Elise and her sister, Maria, Remigio and his eldest son, Jhon, headed off around the world.
Ultrarunner Ryan Sandes met the travellers in Cape Town, South Africa, to take them for a hike (and handstand!) up Table Mountain, before Elise went for a quick run along the ocean promenade. They did some relaxing around the pool at Table Bay, Cape Town's number one hotel, then took on a safari.
Hong Kong awaited them next, where the red carpet was rolled out and the explorers were wined and dined. A skywalk up the Macau Tower (233m) gave them a huge thrill, a thrill beaten only by their visit to the House of Dancing Water, a show that Elise described as “the best show I’ve ever been to”.
In Sydney, Australia, surfing with the pros, hanging out on Bondi Beach and running in a storm with Wings for Life World Run Australian Ambassadors Chief and Em Brabon was on the cards.
The intrepid travellers had a gloriously relaxing time in Hawaii, spending time on Waikiki Beach and lounging by the pool in an activity-free few days to recharge their batteries before they took on the high-octane LA and Rio de Janiero.
The Red Bull Air Force Skydiving Team in LA whisked Elise and Remigio away from their Santa Monica hotel and guided them through their first (and only!) skydive. Not the biggest fans of flying, both Elise and Remigio were stunned to make it back to earth still walking on air with a surge of adrenaline.
A VIP tour around Universal Studios, with both feet on the ground, was a huge highlight for all four of them.
They finished their month-long jaunt with a few days in Rio de Janeiro before flying home with a lifetime of stories to tell friends and family back home.
