As the first triathlete to ever win the world championships in half distance racing three times in a row and winning the Ironman Hawaii for the third time in a row, the hardest triathlon in the world: 2017 was a truly wonderful year for the triathlete, Daniela Ryf. May 6th, she will support the Wings for Life World Run as ambassador.
2017 was a truly wonderful year for you. What was your best moment?
There were many. The race in Hawaii was really hard and not everything went as planned. It was therefore even harder to keep calm until the end. It was one of the most hard-won wins of my career and hence one of the sweetest.
How do you motivate yourself to continue after such a successful year?
I do know that actually, it can't get any better. Yet I know: I can still get better. My motivation is to find out how fast I can be. I think it’s interesting to see how the body changes when I train. The day I don’t believe that I can get any better anymore, I’ll quit.
May 6th, you will support the Wings for Life World Run as ambassador. You won the first Swiss edition in 2014.
That was fun; it was some sort of an experiment form e. My coach had told me to „just run“. In the morning before the run, I had gone jogging and I thought I’d run a marathon, max. Then I started running, and all of a sudden I had put 45 km behind me. So, I decided to stop at the next food station and wait for the catcher car.
Do you personally believe that there will be a cure for spinal cord injury one day?
Of course, I can't tell from a medical point of view, but I do hope so with all my heart. I can't even imagine what it would be like - not being able to walk anymore. If researchers work with all their power, it just has to be possible one of these days.
