Fundraising powerhouse Hufsa Mushtaq is driven by the loss of her mother, an incredible Pakistani woman who was widowed at 34 with four children. “She was young and alone, with a huge responsibility,” says Hufsa. “But instead of complaining and crying, she took action and dedicated her life to raising us on a teacher’s salary. She was a mum and a dad, worked two jobs and always had a smile on her face despite all the negativity life threw at her. She was a positive person, who loved and respected everyone around her.”
“Mum was paralyzed after surgery in 1997, but, despite her restriction, she continued to be an amazing single parent #superwoman.
She loved how active I was, pushing me to go out in minus-20 degrees or whenever I felt lazy. She was my number-one fan and my best friend. I first saw Wings for Life World Run three years ago on TV and promised I would run it one day, for her.”
“When she passed away last year, I was devastated. But running and my mum are my two loves, so I created the fundraising page and registered for the Wings for Life World Run in her name. I love customizing my fundraising page with beautiful photos of Mum, I change them often. It helps me deal with losing her and shows the world how wonderful she was.”
“My initial target was $200 USD, but so many people on Facebook, Instagram and my running groups donated with just me sharing my fundraising page.”
Months before Wings for Life World Run 2018, Hufsa has her Gold Supporter badge having raised over $1,000 USD – and the donations keep coming in.
The passion and drive of people like Hufsa keep hope alive for those living with spinal cord injury. By setting up a page in the Wings for Life World Run fundraising hub, everyone can support vital spinal cord injury research projects. Every penny raised takes us another step closer to a cure.
