Three secrets of a passionate runner

1) Share your experience with supporters.

“You don’t have to be a competitive runner to have a support network,” says Dominika, 36. “Let your friends, family and co-workers know that you’re participating in a race or event so that they can get involved. The biggest satisfaction comes when you share the journey of achieving your objectives with great people.”

She continues, “My kids are five and eight years old, and they get so excited about cheering me on. I feel like I’m running toward them and it drives me, because I want to share the moment with them, not just as a runner but as a mommy!”

2) Make exercise a fun part of your life.

“Whether you’re trying to get in shape or preparing for a race, find what you love about training. You might discover that the more time you spend working out, the more you enjoy it,” encourages Dominika. “For me, running is a chance to be outdoors, and as much as I love my kids, it’s also time all to myself! I wish everyone could find a place for sport in their lives.”

The winner of multiple titles in marathon and mountain running, Stelmach recently added to her medal collection with second place at South Africa’s Two Oceans Marathon, and for her another fun thing about running is: “Travel! I use running as an excuse for traveling, choosing places I haven’t been before.”

The Wings for Life World Run App is a tool that allows participants to train and participate wherever they wish to go. “With the App, you can run by yourself or with others, exploring your own region or a destination you’ve always wanted to visit,” Dominika explains. “Wherever you may be, you are still participating along with everyone else worldwide, and the virtual Catcher Car finish line is still going to find you!”

3) Set realistic goals.

“I think it’s important to have goals that are personal. For example, I would like to win the Wings for Life World Run again, however it’s not just about that. In this race, it doesn’t matter what kind of runner you are – you set your own goal, and when you make it, you feel great. I want to reach 70 kilometers, but for someone else even five or six kilometers will be something to celebrate,” comments Dominika, who set a women’s record of 68.21 kilometers in 2017. “My husband’s target is 21 kilometers, because that will top his personal best – and when he achieves it, he will be a winner. Everyone is a winner if they accomplish their goal.”

Dominika adds: “When it comes to the Wings for Life World Run, what’s really special is that while you are achieving your goal, you can make people feel fantastic. It’s not only about how far you run or even the money you raise for spinal cord injury research – though that’s extremely important. But you’re helping to grow awareness about spinal cord injury and you’re giving hope, because researchers do think a cure is possible one day. This makes the people supporting you feel really good, and it will make you feel really good, too!”
