Still in love with cars and speed, life for Formula One drive David Coulthard slowed down considerably when he became a Catcher Car driver.

Because of his love of speed (and dodgey knees) running is out for him, so this chose to chase down runners from the front seat of the Wings for Life World Run Catcher Car.

“I think that my skills are definitely better behind the wheel. It’s a fun experience for me to be really at the heart of one of the events and to be following and tracking from the Catcher Car.”

Since he heard about the Wings for Life foundation and its drive to find a cure for spinal cord injury, Coulthard has been its avid supporter:

“When I was with the Williams Formula 1 team, as a young test driver back in the 80s and 90s, Frank Williams, the founder and the owner of the team, suffered a spinal cord injury. Amazingly, he returned to work with the aid of a team of nurses, and he continued to be the Williams team principle and take them to the World Championships. Clearly it had a massive effect not only on his life and ability but also on his family and the team of people around him. So, as a young man, I had such an intimate experience of travelling around the world with him and his team that I knew how important it is to have the focus and attention and support on a foundation like Wings for Life.

“It was because of Frank Williams I was given the opportunity to race the car,” says Coulthard, who feels passionately about using his skills to raise awareness for spinal cord injury. “I think what really sets Wings for Life apart is it brings together all the foundations working to find a cure, they share the research programmes, and they really channel the global drive to find a cure.

“I think everyone should sign up for the Wings for Life World Run or download the Selfie Run app. Everyone taking part around the globe will start running simultaneously starting at 11am UTC, whether that’s in the middle of the night, middle of the day, spring or autumn. And what makes this event truly unique is the Catcher Car. The finish line will come to you. I’m coming to get you!”
