Thank You, Mum!

Thank You, Mum!

When you become a mum, all you want for your baby is a long, healthy, happy life. For some mums on the start line on May 8, their dreams for their baby’s life came dangerously close to not happening.

Happy Mother’s Day, Brooke Thabit’s Mum

“I can’t imagine going through this whole experience without my mom,” says Wings for Life World Run ambassador Brooke Thabit, who injured her spinal cord when she dived into shallow water on May 1, 2012. “She’s really been there for me 100% every single day throughout this entire thing. She slept on a cot for four months with me in the hospital, she didn’t leave my side. She completely gave up everything to be there for me. She supports me in everything I do. I love my mom and I’m super lucky to have her.”

“My mom is super excited that the run is on Mother’s Day. It’s a great way to celebrate us being together — my dad and my brother will be there as well.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mike Shaw’s Mum

Mike Shaw was all grown up when he dislocated his neck at C4/C5 on December 16, 2013 while he was skiing in Colorado.

You think when you’ve grown up and left, you don’t need Mum. But in that moment your life changes forever, the one person you need more than anyone is Mum.

“We’ve always been close but I’d say my accident brought us together even more. When I was at my lowest after my crash, and when I needed her more than anything, she was there, with consistent unwavering support. It’s incredible how in the aftermath of such a traumatic event, our bond strengthened. There are silver linings to be found in everything.”

Mike, a Canadian, would love to be able to run with his mum this year, but she’s getting the vacation she’s looked forward to for a very long time. He has a message for her instead:

"I am grateful for the opportunities you’ve given me and all the times you’ve been there for me when I’ve needed you. I love you."

… and Mum, Pippa, whose proudest Mum moment so far was “watching Mike walk with a walker for the first time since his accident. He was with Peter, his physio at GF Strong rehab hospital. I just cried when I saw him,” has a message for Mike. Get your handkerchief ready:

“I am there with you always, my son. You are an amazing young man with a very proud Mum. I love you so much.”

Happy Mother’s Day, Ameli’s Mum

There’s one very special young lady, Ameli, who will be a part of the Wings for Life World Run with her mum, Inci. Ameli sustained a spinal cord injury in a terrible car accident in 2011. She was five.

What do you love most about your mum, Ameli?

She can comfort me as no other can when I'm feeling down.

Describe your mum in three words.

Loving, optimistic & BFF

What would you most like to do for your mum on Mother’s Day?

Help her around the house and buy her a nice gift. And run in the Wings for Life World Run together!

What message do you want to give your mum?

That she's an amazing mom. ❤

And what message would Ameli’s mum, Inci, like to give her little girl?

“I would like her to know … or rather feel, in her heart, that despite everything that has happened to her, life is still worth living, because we have each other, because we have a tremendous amount of love in our family, because we have an unbreakable bond. I hope that through all the bad, she will still be able to see all the good.

“Please do not give up, my little girl. Mummy will always be there for you.”

For Inci, her children are what make her proud and what give her the strength to be as strong as she is.

“My kids make me proud on a daily basis with all that they do!”

So go on, children of the world. Get out there and make your mum proud. And if you can take Mum with you, even better. Spend time together, celebrate together and love each other with everything you have … because you need each other to face life head on.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Wings for Life World Run Explained
Everyone commented on the positive atmosphere and how great it was to be running 100% for a good cause. My personal belief in the Wings for Life foundation and my passion for running made the Wings for Life World Run a no-brainer for me.

I can’t tell you how true the Wings for Life World Run slogan rings true for me. I really am running for those who can’t.

Walking again will be the best feeling ever!

Brooke Thabit, Wings for Life World Run ambassador

To run, to do something for a better tomorrow and to run with people that I love. It is something special because it is not about winning the race...but winning in life itself.
