DOWNHILL OLYMPIC CHAMPION AKSEL LUND SVINDAL HITS THE BREAKS

One of Norway’s most successful alpine skiing athletes ever puts on the breaks – again – to join the global radio show as the voice of the virtual Catcher Car. He and a live-radio team will encourage racers through the Wings for Life World Run on May 6.

As they run to raise money for Wings for Life-supported spinal cord injury research, Wings for Life World Runners can tune into the live global radio show from their phones and get all the news as it happens. But the big radio news of the day is the voice of the virtual Catcher Car: Norway’s great icon, one of the most decorated alpine skiers of his generation and Wings for Life World Run veteran, Aksel Lund Svindal.

In 2014 – the first Wings for Life World Run – Aksel ran in Norway, covering 28.22km. But in 2015, he changed sides. He became the Catcher Car driver, telling competitors in Stavanger ‘If you see me, you’d better speed up.’

On May 6, runners and rollers again face the challenge of staying ahead of the Catcher Car for as long as possible. And Aksel will once again act as the moving finish line. This time, though, you won’t see Aksel – you’ll hear him. He’ll be virtual. Instead of driving, beeping and hanging out of the car’s windows, he’ll be in participants’ ears, telling them he’s closing in, sharing his virtual position and putting goosebumps on the skin of people across the world as he passes them, ending their race through the App, until the Global Champions finish … will Aksel be the voice that ends the Wings for Life World Run 2018?

A quick click on the Wings for Life World Run App radio button and you can share in the excitement and spirit of the day, wherever you are in the world. Accompanied by Brits Jo Flegg and Chris Kirk with American Mike King, Aksel will set hearts pounding and feet moving faster as he says ‘I’m coming to get you’ into the ears of Wings for Life World App Runners. At that moment, 11.30am UTC, Catcher Cars across the world will start the chase and radio listeners will get a real sense of how truly global this movement is.

As part of the radio show, participants will hear why others are running, listen to stories of inspiration and hope and share in the experience, live, with runners and rollers near and far. The commentary team on the ground in event locations and large App Runs will catch interviews with celebs and ambassadors, participants and spectators.

Download the App (iOS / Android), connect with the live radio show which is already airing with pre-run chatter and last-minute training features. And if you want to get a shout out on the day, send a personal message on the Wings for Life World Run Facebook page.
