About Team Ydwer On Thursday 4th February 2021, Ydwer was surf foiling at Noordwijk in the Netherlands when his foil hit the ground and he was thrown forward. Landing on his head he crushed the C6 vertebra in his spine. Unable to move in the water he was rescued by the friends he was surfing with and immediately rushed to hospital where no time was wasted to get him into the operating theatre. Within 12 hours he was able to come off the ventilator, but remained on the ICU ward due to low blood pressure. After the 4th of February, Ydwer stayed for 6 days in the hospital. After that he has been in rehab center Heliomare in Wijk aan Zee for 6 months. They have been treating him with all kinds of therapy; physiotherapy / occupational therapy, but also doing sports; handbiking, badminton and ping pong! A lot of training and busy days, mentally it is hard sometimes. But the overall vibe is stay positive, no matter what. 2026: Ydwer will be taking photos again during the Flagship Run in Breda. It's running time! ———————- 2021: Only 4 months after the accident Ydwer rolled 2km with his wheelchair. 2022: 1 year and 4 months after the accident Ydwer walked behind the walking frame 45 meters. 2023: 2 years and 4 months after the accident Ydwer walked behind the walking frame 100 meters. Being caught by the virtual catcher car it didn't stop him from taking photos for the event! 2024: 3 years and 4 months after the accident Ydwer was back at the same spot he took photos for Wings For Life Flagship run in Breda in 2017. He was back in action doing what he loves most. Taking photos! 2025: 4 years and 4 months after the accident Ydwer took photos for the Flagship Run in Breda!
