Slovenia in Motion: A Run Through a Landscape of Diversity

Slovenia may be small, but its diversity rivals that of far larger countries. Here, the Alps meet the Mediterranean, the Karst, and the Pannonian Plain – creating a landscape of striking diversity, reflected not only in nature, but also in a vibrant cultural and architectural heritage and a world-class culinary scene.

This year, the Wings for Life World Run presened by I feel Slovenia once again begins in Ljubljana, one of Europe’s greenest capitals. Shaped by centuries of history, the city offers a compelling stage for the start. At Congress Square, as the final seconds count down, attention naturally turns to Ljubljana Castle, rising above the city and opening up panoramic views in every direction.

The 2026 route introduces a distinctive opening: a scenic loop through Ljubljana itself. The course takes runners through Bežigrad and Šiška, around Rožnik and into Rožna dolina, where the city gently fades into leafy surroundings. The course then draws back towards the centre, bringing runners close to the start area between the 11th and 12th kilometre along Aškerc Street. For many participants targeting distances between 10 and 15 kilometres, this creates a seamless return to the event hub, where the atmosphere continues with a live programme and big-screen coverage.

The course continues through Šmarca to Kamnik, one of Slovenia’s most picturesque medieval towns. Here, the runners reach the 40th kilometre, surrounded by views of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. With its well-preserved old town and layered architectural heritage, Kamnik also marks the highest point of the route, at just over 386 metres above sea level.

The marathon distance of 42 kilometres is reached in Podgorje, near the Gostilna Pri Slavki. From there, the route continues towards Komenda, the hometown of Tadej Pogačar, one of the world’s leading cyclists. In this stretch, views open towards Krvavec, a popular alpine resort that transforms into a hub for outdoor experiences in the warmer months.

The course then leads on via Lahovče towards Vodice, descending to its lowest point in the underpass beneath the Podgorica–Sneberje motorway (275 m).

Dynamic and varied, the route weaves together urban life, cultural heritage, and natural beauty – offering a powerful way to experience Slovenia: not just by seeing it, but by moving through it.
