What is the Wings for Life World Run?
The Wings for Life World Run is a truly unique and global race for both runners and wheelchair participants. Instead of a finish line, competitors race side by side to keep ahead of the Virtual Catcher Car. On Wings for Life World Run participants in Austria can also run together in Unterfrauenhaid. Meet up with your friends, download the Wings for Life World Run App and join all the other people running until the Virtual Catcher Car catches you of course. The race starts at exactly 1:00:00 PM. The Virtual Catcher Car takes off 30 minutes after the start at 14 km/h and steadily increases its speed until the last athletes have been caught. 100% of all donations and the entry fees go directly into spinal cord research projects.
Track
Approximately 5-Kilometre Loop Course
The planned route is a varied loop through Unterfrauenhaid and along the surrounding field paths and paved roads. It is suitable for running, walking and Nordic walking. During the Wings for Life App Run, participants can complete the loop several times depending on their individual pace and performance.
Route Description
The start and finish area is located at the SC Unterfrauenhaid sports ground.
From the sports ground, the route initially heads towards the village centre and continues through Unterfrauenhaid towards the Parish and Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
After passing the church, the route continues along the northern edge of the village, following the marked course in a westerly direction.
The scenic section of the loop then begins. The course continues westwards along field and woodland paths. This section forms the westernmost part of the route.
From there, the course leads southeast back towards Unterfrauenhaid and the sports ground, where the first lap ends. Participants who have not yet been caught by the virtual Catcher Car will then begin another lap.
Course Characteristics
The course is approximately five kilometres long and includes:
Paved roads and paths within the village
Field paths
Gently changing surfaces
Quiet paths along the edge of the village
The loop is generally easy to follow. Depending on the weather, however, some field paths may be uneven, slippery or wet. Sturdy footwear is therefore recommended.
Important Information
The entire route will be inspected once again before the event and clearly marked. Road crossings, junctions and sections with limited visibility are expected to be secured with signs and/or course marshals.
All participants remain responsible for complying with applicable road traffic regulations. On public roads and paths, consideration must be shown for other road users, walkers, as well as agricultural and forestry vehicles.
The final route may still be subject to minor adjustments following the course inspection or due to prevailing path and weather conditions.
